I'm sure the Jaguar owner had no idea how much of a risk he was taking. He came all the way from Stuttgart because of an illuminated MIL warning light and a "mixture too rich" fault code stored in memory. With this fault, he drove about 2,000 km!
"So what?!" would be the words of many in the automotive world. The MIL light is on in every 20th car; in some, it's been on for years. But this is different. There's a high risk that the engine can have a sudden, unexpected mechanical breakdown.
We didn't know this at the beginning either, so we drove the car during testing. But gradually, as we took diagnostic steps and evaluated the recordings, our foreheads began to sweat. The fear of engine seizure at our FCD Garage would be the second one this month, perhaps for similar reasons.
As ten out of nine mechanics would explain, it doesn't have to be a failed sensor or a hole in the exhaust or intake. In the case of direct fuel injection engines, one tricky fault can seize the engine almost immediately.
The FCD-Logger installed in the OBD connector gave us 90 % information to determine where the problem was...
The disconnected PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) hose emits strong vapours even though the engine is half-cold (3 minutes after a cold start). The engine oil content is heavily contaminated with petrol.
This is the probable source of massive fuel oil contamination. Hot petrol evaporates continuously during operation, and only the heaviest components remain in the oil. Diluted oil has decreased lubricating properties, which is harmful to the engine.
Want to charge your battery? You have to open the boot! Although the terminals for charging the battery are in the engine compartment, the owner's manual strictly instructs you to open the boot lid before connecting the charger. Just for fun...
Here are the owner's manual instructions in B/W.
